SOME MILESTONES OF EUROPE

1957: Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg found the European Economic Community.

1973: Denmark, Ireland and Britain join.

1981: Greece joins the EEC.

1986: Spain and Portugal join.

1992: The Maastricht treaty. The EEC is now named European Union.

1995: Austria, Finland and Sweden join.

2003: Ten new European countries sign accession treaties in Athens. They will formally join on May 1 2004. These are: Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

        These are the member states of the EU: Austria, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hellas, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

        The flag of the European Union is a circle of 12 yellow stars on a blue background.

        The capital city of the EU is Brussels, Belgium.

        The seat of the European Parliament is in Strasbourg, France.
