GREEK LANGUAGE STAMPS

    A new set of stamps has been issued by the Greek Post Office Service on September 25, 2002. The set, a commemorative of the Greek script, carries the title 'GREEK LANGUAGE'. and consists of four stamps. All stamps have designs showing samples of the written Greek language, the Greek script, through the ages.

  1. The 0,45 E stamp shows a sample of the written Greek language during the Classical Age (5th century BC). It has been taken from an inscription found in the Acropolis of Athens which contains the Greek Holy Law, a legal text.


  2. The 0,60 E stamp shows a sample of the Linear B script used during the 13th cent. BC. It has been taken from an inscription found in the area of Pilos in Peloponnisos. The inscription is shown on the stamp.


  3. The 0,90 E stamp shows the handwriting of General Makrigiannis taken from his written work: 'Visions and Wonders' (1850).


  4. The 2,15 E stamp shows the Byzantine script (11th Century AD) used in religious texts. The particular was taken from a religious text kept in the libraries of Agio Oros in the Halkidiki area of Northern Greece.
