EDUCATION

Education at all levels is provided free to all residents of the country. It is compulsory for children up to the age of 15 to go to school. Primary education includes primary schools (ages 6-12). Secondary education includes the gymnasio (12-15 yrs) and the lykio (15-18 yrs).  

        Higher education includes both universities and technological educational institutes (TEI). There are several universities and TEI all over Greece. Also, there is the Hellenic Open University (www.eap.gr) which is located in Patra and offers distance learning courses. 

There are two Universities in Thessaloniki, Aristotle University (www.auth.gr) founded in 1925 and the University of Macedonia (www.uom.gr) founded in 1948. The Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (www.teithe.gr) was established in 1983. It has five faculties and 20 different departments.  

All educational institutions in Greece are supervised by the Ministry of Education and Religion (www.ypepth.gr).
