HELLONET PROJECT

We have been working for the HelloNet (Hellenic Enjoyable Language Learning on the Net) project for two and a half years now and are now trying very hard to fulfill our obligations. The aim of the project is a two-fold one. We have built the HelloNet website http://hellonet.teithe.gr in order to provide:

a)     on-line distance learning educational material for the teaching of Greek to university students; a multimedia intensive course in a user-friendly environment.

b)     web-based information about Greek institutions and various useful links.

2003 has been a very productive year for us. We are scheduled to produce on-line material for teaching the Greek language to prospective Erasmus students. What was to be done was to write the material, test it and evaluate it, transform it into dynamic web pages, add voices, test it and load it on the web site. We have finished with all 20 lessons and most of them have already been loaded. We are working now with testing and correcting the uploaded material. The material is available in five languages so people speaking those languages can be enrolled to the course. We have also been enriching the web site with lots of information about Greece and also with links, which will be of interest to our e-students. All information is provided in five different language plus Greek.

We believe we have been working on a challenging and very big project. It is innovative, as such a course does not exist on the Internet until now. The lessons have a sequence, all lessons have the same arrangement and they are accompanied by voices. Two ‘ancient Greek Gods’ appear on every lesson and help students understand the Greek life and culture. The material deals with every day situations which are of interest to young people and is accompanied by exercises of various types. All exercises have ‘HELP’ and a ‘key’.

As we have already created about 6500 web pages our most serious problems now lie with testing and correcting the on-line materials. This task has proven to be time consuming as the things to be tested are varied and  plenty and I personally have a fear that this task will hardly ever end.

We are working with institutions and colleagues from five different European countries all over Europe and are enjoying the idea of multiculturalism and the different voices heard when it comes to issues of cooperation. We have already met twice, in Lisbon and Valencia and are about to have our next meeting here in Thessaloniki soon. These meetings have given us the opportunity to meet, know each other better and strengthen cooperation between us. We are a team who has proven that common projects help in the mutual understanding of people and different cultures and we are already discussing ideas for future cooperation. We hope that our outcomes will be of help to students interested in getting to know our country, its language and its people.
