LINGUISTIC NEEDS ANALYSIS

FINAL RESULTS

 

 

            In the framework of the HELLO NET programme we have conducted a research in order to assess the linguistic needs of the target population in all participating institutions. This research was realized with the use of questionnaires distributed to prospective ERASMUS students in the partner institutions. The questionnaires were translated, by case, in the partners’ languages, so that understanding of the content was assured.

                        Fifty students were asked, on average, in every partner institution. To be more exact, the respondents were: from IUFM Bourgogne,FR (24 students), Universidad Polytecnica de Valencia,ES (50 students), Universiteit Gent,BE (94 students), Universita di Trieste,IT (101 students),Institut des Sciences et Techniques des Aliments de Bordeaux,FR (66 students), Societa da Lingua Portuguesa,PT (54 students).

            In total 425 questionnaires were received. The questionnaires are anonymous.

            The largest number of students (91,8%) belong to the 18-28 age group, while the rest (8,2%) are 29-55 years old.

CONCLUSIONS

 

The analysis of the linguistic needs survey gave the following results:

The total number of respondents is 425.

 

They are all students of 18 - 28 years old (91,8%) and 87,3% of these come from European Union member States.

 

47% study Applied Sciences while 42.4% study Humanities.

 

A small percentage (17%) have visited Greece in the past and said that they liked most: the climate, the people, the culture, the cuisine and the museums of Greece. On the other hand they mostly did not like: the pollution, the cuisine and the transportation system. A very small percentage (3.5%) know some elements of the Greek language.

 

They admit they want to take part in an exchange programme with a Greek institution (77.1%), and also to take Greek language courses months before (43.7%) or even a year before (26.7%)their arrival here.

 

They consider distance-earning education as user friendly (45.4%)and would trust in such a method in order to learn Greek (45%).

 

A considerable percentage (74%)is computer literate and an even greater number (87%) use the Internet services.

 

Concerning Greece they are interested in knowing:

 

           Greek mythology: (50%)

     Ancient Greek history: (30%)

Contemporary Greek history: (20%)

 

Concerning Modern Greece they want to be informed on issues such as:

Cuisine, Greek way of life, Political situation, Education, Religion, Museums and monuments, Athens, Local festivities,  The Greek language, Educational institutions, Theatres and cinemas, Sights, Greek music, Nightlife, Economy, The climate, Folk dances, Customs and traditions and Civil rights.

 

They are mostly interested in: The organization of Universities and the courses offered, modern way of life, customs and the Greek culture.

 

Concerning the Greek history and culture they are interested in topics like:

·     Mythology, History, Sociological details, The Art, The Greek language, Literature, Greek music, Ancient philosophers, Customs and traditions, and the History of the Greek language.
